All sorts of fun and healthy recipes with 2 CDs of original music! The author and musician recognize the importance of and help to inspire pleasure in preparing meals as well as eating them! A very healthy oriented collection of recipes with something for everyone that I will keep on hand for a long time to come. In fact, I think I'll order a copy for my 21 y.o. son!
I received a complimentary copy of No Fret Cooking recently. It is a treasure trove of good food information learned in the comfort of listening to beautiful solo guitar. No Fret means exactly that! No fretting about having to order ingredients online or drive to a big city in order to find the grains, flours, herbs, and spices mentioned in these recipes. As author Marilynn Carter makes clear, we can eat in a healthy way locally. The idea of "no fret" extends to the idea of using the recipes, customizing them to your taste, trying new flours, spices, and herbs by simply turning to the back of the book and discovering something like Gomasio is a condiment that is made from toasted sesame seeds and salt. You can buy it or make it yourself. It is high in calcium and vitamins A and B.
The information is easy to access, understand, and use. There is an excellent short section on questions that many people have about what is organic and what are seasonal foods. Additionally, Marilynn includes tips for people with various food sensitivities including gluten and candidiasis issues. Her conversational style, knowledge, and experience in choosing to eat healthy foods make for a spirited, useful, and "neighbor next door" sharing.
The cookbook comes with two CDs--one for cooking and the other for eating. The music is composed and played by Steve Carter, an astute jazz musician whose compositions are perfect for focusing on creating a meal, as well as for enjoying one's culinary creations. Some examples include "The Great Asparagus Caper" and "Baba Ghanosh" for preparing the meal and "A Lighter Shade of Parm" and "Chakra Juice" for dining. The humor and splendid musicianship are perfect for trying something new or just sitting at the kitchen table waiting for the lighter shade of parm to finish up in the oven.
I very much like the design of this cookbook. The jazz quotes, the tips, the space, the size of print, and originality of combining so much that is really the basis for healthy cooking in a single place is a brilliant concept. Everything about this cookbook implies a love of food, eating, creating, and sharing. This is a book that everyone ought to buy for someone they love. It is a perfect gift . . . especially to give yourself!
This cookbook is the creation of the husband and wife team of Steve and Marilynn Carter. Marilynn’s part was the many fine recipes in the book. Steve’s contribution was the two accompanying music CDs. The cookbook is full of a wide variety of foods; appetizers, soups, side dishes, main dishes, desserts and more. The cookbook addresses food allergies and organic ingredients as well as leaving room for the reader to add their own “creativity and personalization” to the recipes. The two CDs contain music composed and performed on guitar by Steve. The first music CD is to play while cooking the recipes and the second CD is to play during the meal. I found this book - CD combo to be very interesting and well done.
